The Shaman's (Angatkut) Drum by Abraham Anghik Ruben

The Shaman's (Angatkut) Drum

The idea for developing this mask came from a Shaman's drum handle from the Yukon river delta, Alaska.

The drum handle in question was an effigy of the Shaman, legs pointed down, abdomen open with exposed ribs, arms raised holding onto the drums rim.

The exposed ribs of the Shaman represent the Shamans initiation whereby he is brought to the verge of death.  This is thought to be cleansing in spirit and reborn to an elevated status of a man of power, both in the spirit and the physical realm.
